I started this blog a few years ago as a way to cover career issues and job-hunting tips, when I was the editor of Yahoo! HotJobs.
I now work as director of content marketing for Pearl.com, but I am still using this blog to more loosely write about career advice, the job market, and issues that affect my life and work. But I also reserve the right to just post stuff for fun that has no career value.
After getting laid off in early 2011, I started writing about my experiences in what I call “The Jobless Zone.” Being unemployed can make you feel like you’ve entered a separate space of reality, off the grid. I hope tales of my journey through it might help others.
I administer this site, and I’m basically learning as I go. So I welcome any feedback or suggestions. You can also see more about me on my LinkedIn profile: http://www.linkedin.com/in/tommusbach

Interesting storefront in The Netherlands.
Howdy do. I finally started reading your blog. Well done! One teeny thing: add a link directly to your email. How are you? Let’s catch up.
Hi Tom,
I came across your blog while I was researching a Front Page News Editor position at Yahoo! I see you spent a few years there, and I’d like to get your opinion on some things, if you don’t mind. My email address is psmartella@yahoo.com.
Thanks,
Paul Martella
Great stuff, Tom!
I want to share with you a book I recently published which I believe may be of interest to you. It’s titled “The Accidental Career” – a collection of interviews with people who “fell” into careers they love rather than walked into careers they planned.
Research for the project included >70 interviews across ~20 counties, covering ~100 different professions, and part of the inspiration for this book comes from my own unorthodox background as a Harvard-trained architect turned McKinsey consultant turned internet entrepreneur turned writer/editor.
The result is a collection of interviews with individuals who traversed across different industries through an unplanned, morphological process rather than in a singular trajectory with foreseeable steps and landings. The stories cover not only how they found fulfilling careers, but also the highs-and-lows and joys and anxieties in the process. Some of the interviewees include:
- A management consultant turned world adventurer and holder of 4 world records
- A MIT rocket scientist turned country managing director of JP Morgan
- A homeless high school drop out turned professional motorcycle racer turned lawyer
- A mechanical engineer turned comic artist fighting against Middle East extremism
- A Goldman Sachs banker turned maker of custom-fit condoms
- … and others
